HEALTHCARE PROJECTS

HEALING ARCHITECTURE

BSM apply a ‘salutogenic’ approach to the design of healthcare facilities. This is an approach to wellness which focuses on health and not on disease. Emphasis is placed on creating ‘person-friendly’ healthcare facilities which feel less clinical than traditional models and focus on patients’ needs. Easy access, practicality and comfort are considered with staff, patients, and visitors in mind. Our past projects included both public and private healthcare facilities. BSM designed the Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, a 16-storey, purpose designed private hospital in Cape Town, as well as the Dr Harry Surtie District Hospital in Upington, and the Thembalethu Community Day Centre, a cathedral of healing, in George.
