Civic infrastructure and public spaces are vital elements in our urban centres and are often an expression of urban pride. BSM has been privileged to design several prominent public spaces including the George Inter Urban Transport Hub, the Beaufort West Youth Hub and the Upington Airport and Magistrates Court.
The Beaufort West Youth Hub was a particularly rewarding design for our architects. The hub was designed to incorporate a range of facilities that provide for holistic development of young people in the local community. The integrated space incorporated classrooms, technology centres, dining, sporting, and recreation landscapes. We enjoyed the challenge of marrying the physical needs of the buildings with the demands of the harsh climate. The architects incorporated hand-crafted mosaic details and laser cut metal aloe panels as well as cool drink cans repurposed in to lighting chandeliers.
